New battle against BNP

Well more of a skirmish really. In a bid to halt the growing support for the British National Party in Heworth, York, where there is to be a by-election following the death of a Conservative Councillor. The York Socialist Students and Anti-Fascist Action are planning to deliver pamphlets to the electorate ahead of the election on September 6.

You can read the full details here, which includes some very good comments by Ian Dawson, the secretary for the BNP in Yorkshire.

It will be a tough one, because it's close between the Tories and the Liberal Democrats, but we're expecting to get a good share of the vote," he said.

"We've had some very good feedback so far from the ward, where we've got quite a few members.

"We've got members in every single ward in York, and quite a high number in a lot of the wards.

"The very fact that people go out to campaign against us just shows how different we are - at least we give people a choice of something different and new, which is nothing to do with fascism.
"

How interesting, that this grouping should appeal to the electorate in this fashion. If they feel so strongly why don't they publish their policies and stand a candidate? I suppose because nobody would listen to their rubbish. It will be interesting to see what leaflets have to say?

The other interesting thing is the change in strategy employed by the Anti-Fascist Action group. This left over dogs dinner vomited out from the ANL, was an organisation that believed not in the democratic process but the boot.

Back in the late 80's, they were condemned for their use of violence and squadism where they would attempt to use violent confrontation to break up meetings and other activities being carried out by legally approved political parties. I wonder if the people of Heworth know that? Perhaps they should be told.
